Message from President of Pakistan

The World Environment Day observed on June 5th every year, in over hundred countries around the world, demonstrates the collective will of the international community acting as a global village to raise awareness around key environmental concerns, which, if not appropriately handled threaten the very survival of life on earth.
This day heralds the realisation of an important reality that addressing core environmental concerns no longer remains a luxury. As oceans cover more then 70% of the earth's surface and 90% of life, therefore the theme adopted for this year, "Wanted-Seas and Oceans-Dead or Alive" is indeed a very apt one.
On this day I would like to reiterate that Pakistan remains fully conscious to discharge its responsibility to protect this "Global Common" for the present and future use of our populace. Pakistan at the national level has taken a number of initiatives to combat marine pollution. Some of the major initiatives include the preparation of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan (ICZMP), a national programme of action under the global programme of action for the protection of marine environment from Land Based Activities; contributed to the development of an action plan for the protection and management of the South Asian Seas Plan co-ordinated by SACEP.
Port Reception Facilities have been set up for sustainable reception of ballast water, waste oil, noxious liquid substances, sewage and garbage from ships in accordance with the international standards.
These initiatives demonstrate the government's resolve in sustainable use of our coastal ecosystem. I however, realise that there is a need for renewed commitment and efforts for the sustainable development of oceans and coastal resources through effective co-operation among national, sub regional, regional and international institutions responsible for marine and oceans protection and management.
It may be appreciated that the government, alone, cannot prevent the unsustainable exploitation of marine resources and the pollution of seas and oceans - it needs the co-operation, support, participation and commitment of its citizens as well.
I appeal to the nation to join hands with the government in helping us protect the vitality of our seas and oceans by not only agreeing to stop pollution that is affecting them but by practically taking the necessary steps and demonstrating that we are an environmentally conscious nation.
