The Asian Development Bank said Saturday it was giving a 420,000-dollar technical assistance grant to Bangladesh to help its female garment workers who lose jobs when textile export quota curbs end.
The grant will be used to help provide opportunities and protection for workers retrenched when the Multi-Fibre Agreement (MFA) quota restrictions end this year, a statement from the ADB headquarters in Manila, said.
Women, who make up about 90 percent of the estimated 1.8 million workers in Bangladesh garment factories, would be the main beneficiaries of the grant.
Bangladeshi garment factories are expected to face tough competition with the end of the MFA, under which trade in textile and clothing products have been managed in an international system of quotas.
