A central leader of Pakistan Peoples Party Nafis Siddiqui on Sunday demanded fresh elections in order to tide over the crisis facing the country.
The elections will be held soon. "We do not accept the present Election Commission and polls should be held under the supervision of another body like Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and that former Prime Ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif be allowed to contest these", he said while talking to newsmen in Karachi.
He maintained that fresh polls were absolutely necessary as the government had failed to establish its writ.
He spoke of the violence and killings in Karachi, undemocratic actions of present rulers, price hike, unemployment, which had made lives of people across the country "miserable."
Nafis Siddiqui PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain had met PPP parliamentarian president Makhdoom Amin Fahim in the National Assembly and proposed formation of government of consensus in Sindh province in order to restore peace and control law and order situation in the cosmopolitan city following killings of about 60 innocent people in violence during May last.
He said the proposal was meant to bail out the present government from prevailing serious crisis and divert attention of the people.
"PPP will not join any government through backdoor", he stated.
Nafis Siddiqui said Amin Fahim enjoys support of 81 MNAs, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leader Maulana Fazlur Rahman was appointed leader of opposition in National Assembly, although he has support of only 61 MNAs.
The PPP leader warned that if the political parties were "pushed to the wall, it would weaken the Federation. It was therefore essential that democratic process should be strengthened."
He recalled that in October 2002 general elections, PPP got highest number of votes from the people who gave mandate in favour of the party, which was not accepted.
He said at that time Amin Fahim also declined offer to become Prime Minister according to the conditions of the rulers that he should leave the PPP and its Chairperson Ms Benazir Bhutto.
