Strengthening of Livestock Services Project (SLSP), a European Union and Government of Pakistan-funded nation-wide project, is holding a one-day workshop on 'identification of problems in livestock sector' on Monday, June 21.
The workshop aims at to identify the existing problems in the livestock sector as perceived by the different stakeholders and by representatives of different production systems within different agro-ecological zones of the province.
A press release issued here on Saturday said that the livestock sector is very complex; farmers keep different types of livestock in different agro-ecological zones and in different farming systems.
Many different stakeholders are actively involved in the process of animal health and production, processing and marketing of livestock and livestock products. Livestock research can make an important contribution in advancing the performance of the livestock sector.
The release said that SLSP addresses problems that are directly or indirectly related to the delivery of public or private services to livestock farmers. It is expected that through the improvement of service delivery, livestock owners can raise the production level of their animals, which ultimately is expected to contribute to better human nutrition levels and cash income.
The project consists of 10 components, through which livestock issues would be addressed, including policy and regulatory framework, disease surveillance, diagnosis and reporting, vaccine production, strengthen field veterinary services, human resource development (training of all stakeholders), inter-disciplinary livestock sector research, information and communication, studies and surveys, regional and sub-regional co-operation and co-ordination and core project management.
