A "Consultation Workshop for the Establishment of National Gender and Energy Network" organised by the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) opens here on Monday.
The daylong workshop aims to identify the gender and energy issues prevalent in Pakistan and to review related activities being conducted by various organisations and individuals.
It will be attended by key actors from public and private sectors as well as non-governmental organisations, who are interested in empowering women and engendering energy.
The network is endorsing and advancing one of the recommendations of "networking and linkages" made by the working group on energy sector for the ninth five-year plan. It is observed that energy is tightly linked with the environment, poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
As women comprise about 50 percent of energy users and their energy needs are shaped by culturally and socially defined roles therefore it is essential to add a gender equality perspective into energy.
