Information Secretary Pakistan Muslim League Senator Tariq Azeem on Sunday said that democracy is flourishing and political stability has gained roots in the country under the elected government.
Talking to newsmen here, he said the country has never been under martial law since President General Pervez Musharraf took over the rule since October 1999.
He said now the real democracy has been revived with the transfer of full constitutional powers to the democratically elected government.
Tariq Azeem, rejecting the charges of the opposition regarding running the country under the umbrella of martial law, said parliament is working fully without any interference.
He said it is absolutely wrong to say that the Army intervenes in civil governments affairs. In fact, he maintained there are some political forces in the country who are trying to achieve their nefarious designs, creating hurdles in the way of democratic government and then invite the Armed forces to step in.
The PML Information Secretary said before October 1999 several opposition forces had formed a political alliance with the one-point agenda of "Oust-Nawaz Sharif" and held countrywide rallies against the then Nawaz government.
These forces also invited the Army to take over the rule by dislodging the civil government, he added.
He regretted the double standards of the opposition who themselves welcomed General Pervez Musharraf and now when the country has been put on the path to political stability and started gaining economic benefits, these forces are criticising the armed forces role.
Referring to the remarks of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto on the murder of Munawar Suharwardi terming it a threat signal for her life if she returns, the PML Information Secretary said that these are tactics only to prolong her self-exile and gain sympathies of general masses.
Tariq said "She has forgotten that her brother Murtaza Bhutto was murdered when she was Prime Minister and there was no spree of terror incidents in the country."
"Nobody forced Benazir to go abroad and it was her own choice" Tariq Azeem said adding that now there is no bar on her to come back. She should come back and face the cases, he added.
The PML condemns the brutal killing of Munawar Suharwardy as well as terrorism in all its forms in any party of the world, Tariq said.
