The remaining suspects in the killing of 17 members of a Muslim family surrendered Thursday more than two years after the massacre took place amid riots in the Indian state of Gujarat, police said Thursday.
The 15 suspects handed themselves over together in the western state's Panchmahals district and will be brought before a court on murder charges, the district police superintendent Nirja Gotru said.
The suspects were accused of being part of a Hindu mob that burned alive 17 Muslims in an extended family on March 1, 2002 in the village of Delol. The six other people accused in the case have already been arrested.
The case drew attention after a survivor, Firdaus Ghanchi, tried to complain to police about the massacre of his family and authorities were allegedly uncooperative.
He finally filed a police complaint in December 2003 after he sought the assistance of the autonomous National Human Rights Commission which asked the Supreme Court to intervene.
