The National Assembly will elect a new leader of the House on Tuesday following Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali's resignation, officials said.
President Pervez Musharraf accepted Jamali's resignation and summoned a special session of the National Assembly on Tuesday to elect a new leader of the House to replace the premier who also held the post, they said.
Nominations to elect new leader of the House will be submitted on Monday till 2:00pm with the Assembly Secretariat.
A number of MNAs belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) have singed the nomination papers to elect PML president and nominated prime minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as leader of the House.
A special session of the National Assembly will be held on Tuesday evening at 4:00pm under Clause 2(a) of Article 91.
The leader of the House will be elected through the method of division.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the PML and its allied parliamentary parties will be held at the Parliament House on Monday at 11:30pm, which will be presided over by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.
The PML MNAs will then submit nomination papers with the Assembly Secretary.
The opposition parties in the National Assembly, including Pakistan People's Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) have also decided to contest the election.
The leaders of the PPPP and MMA remained busy on Sunday in consultations with each other to chalk out the strategy to contest the election with a unanimous candidate.
The election on Tuesday is seen as a formality to ascertain Shujaat has the support of the House before he is sworn in as prime minister.
