A four-member visiting delegation headed by Sri Lankan Minister for Post and Telecommunication D M Jayarafne (MP) held a sideline meeting with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman Major General Shahzada Alam Malik (Retd) and members of the authority here on Thursday.
The Sri Lankan delegation is in Pakistan in connection with the Saarc countries second conference on telecommunication sector.
The PTA chairman informed the delegation about steps taken by the Government of Pakistan to expand the telecom sector. He counted reduction in line tariff and other incentives offered to the telecom investors for the development of the industry.
The chairman said that foreign investors have great scope to invest in Pakistan's telecom market. He added that tele-density in Pakistan was only 2.8 percent and the cell phone penetration was 4.4 million, which was quite low compared to rising demand of the public.
The chairman said that the PTA had recently issued cell phone licenses to two new companies and the initiative was expected to add 10 million more mobile phone users within the next three years.
He informed the minister that licenses for fixed line telecommunication services were also being issued to private companies and the PTA is holding a public hearing on July 5 for grant of Long Distance International (LDI) licenses.
He told the visiting minister that activation charges for mobile phones had been reduced from Rs2000 to Rs1000 in the current budget and the authority would also continue to play its dynamic role in providing maximum relief to consumers.
