The ruling PML on Sunday condemned opposition propaganda dubbing prime minister-in-waiting Shaukat Aziz as 'US agent', and said that Shaukat is a much better Pakistani than those in the opposition.
Addressing a joint press conference here at the PML House, PML information secretary, Senators Tariq Azeem and Muhammad Ali Durrani and party's additional secretary Iqbal Dar said that Shaukat Aziz would be elected to the National Assembly with overwhelming majority in bye-election in two constituencies.
The opposition's mudslinging on Shaukat is part of the negative politics, and the parties sitting in the opposition are very well-known for doing such things, they said. "Shaukat Aziz is a farsighted and well groomed person.
His clean track record and other credentials paved the way for him to be nominated as future prime minister," said Tariq Azeem.
He said that there must be no doubt about Shaukat Aziz being a Pakistani and a firm believer. "To doubt him on such grounds will absolutely be fictitious," he added.
Shaukat, he said, would put the country on the path of progress. Under his leadership, Pakistan would be Asian Tiger in the near future.
Azeem said that GDP growth rate had touched the figure of 6.4 percent during the last fiscal year against 3.1 percent which was recorded when General Pervez Musharraf took over in 1999.
He said that the present government has not levelled charges against Benazir Bhutto and has no plan to withdraw cases against her. The Swiss court has formally indicted her in the reference, said Azeem.
Senator Durrani said that the present government had made yet another breakthrough by taking berth for the country to be a member of Asean Regional Forum (ARF).
"This is really a big victory of the present government. Pakistan's stature in the comity of nations has been enhanced with the help prudent policies being pursued by the president General Pervez Musharraf and the civilian government," he said.
With change of prime minister and nominating another head of the government who would take over after two months, a new political culture is taking place. This will go a long a way to strengthen the party system, which is essential for the democracy to take firm roots in the country, he said.
He said that Shaukat Aziz would resign from Senate in accordance with the Election Commission rules. He said that Pakistan would say "bye bye" to the IMF in October and "all the credit goes, undisputedly to Shaukat Aziz".
If such a man is being made the prime minister then what is wrong with it. It does not matter who had nominated him for the slot of prime minister, Durrani said.
