The government will spend Rs 87 billion on improvement in the Punjab irrigation system, ignored for decades.
The chairman, standing committee on Irrigation in the Punjab Assembly, Shaukat Ali Dogar talking to a delegation of farmers here on Tuesday, said the federal government has approved a grant of Rs 82 billion while the Punjab government would provide about Rs 5.5 billion.
This mega project includes repair and lining of canals, re-modelling of barrages, construction of small dams, etc.
Three other mega projects to be completed in phases are under way in the province to cost Rs 20.17 billion.
Dogar said the Punjab government is keen to usher in a green revolution to achieve self-sufficiency in food.
