Punjab Population Welfare Department (PWD) has recommended cash incentive for couples who decide to limit their family size to two or maximum three children only.
PWD Punjab Minister Naseem Lodhi told a meeting here on Friday that a proposal had been given to the federal ministry to award Rs 5,000 to families who would consent to have ligation after two children and Rs 4,000 for those making similar decision after three children.
"Punjab constitutes almost 56 percent of the country population, therefore substantial efforts are needed to control the population in this province," said the minister.
The meeting was told that as many as 2,196 family welfare centres were operating in the province, while over a thousand male mobilisers had also been deputed for that purpose.
Message oriented stage plays are being shown in rural areas, while promotional graphics have been initiated on buses in cities to propagate the message of small family norm in the province.
