Power 'Consumer's Association' has criticised Nepra for withholding electricity relief allowed to consumers earlier.
In a statement here on Friday Aftab Ahmad, Chairman, Consumers' Association, said that it appeared that Nepra was playing a cruel joke on the consumers.
When Nepra realised that consumers of electricity in Pakistan were heavily burdened compared with consumers in neighbouring countries like China, India, Sri Lana, it persuaded regional distributing companies to provide relief to consumers.
Accordingly, Fesco announced to cut the tariff by 26 paisa per unit for consumers of above 300 units.
Although this tariff reduction by Fesco was very discriminatory and insufficient as against its income and profit, yet the consumers were content that something was better than nothing, he said.
He said that the poorest sector of the society which consumes less than 300 units deserves most relief but this well deserving sector has been ignored. The is tantamount to discrimination, is unfair and against the norms of justice and equality, he argued.
"What to say of providing relief to poor sector, the electric company has now even backed out of its declared commitment. The Fesco is seeking refuge through review appeal filed before Nepra and has refused to allow relief to consumers in current electricity bills. This is sheer injustice and highhandedness against helpless consumers, he said.
The Chairman appealed to President Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shujjat Hussain and Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz to take cognisance of this serious matter and redress the grievances of the consumers in the name of good governance and relief to common man.
