President Pervez Musharraf, Jordan's King Abdullah II, and prime ministers Costas Karamanlis of Greece and Adrian Nastase of Romania were in attendance on Sunday at the wedding of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's daughter.
More than 4,500 police were deployed in downtown Istanbul for the wedding in the city's conference center, which less than two weeks ago hosted Nato leaders including US President George W. Bush.
As for the Nato summit, many streets around the center were closed to traffic and police sharpshooters were posted on rooftops.
Nearly 7,000 people, including the entire cabinet, were invited to the civil ceremony that saw Erdogan's elder daughter Esra marry Berat Albayrak.
Albayrak is the son of the owner of an Islamist paper, which supports Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, which has Islamist roots.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who attended the wedding of Erdogan's son Bilal last year, was unable to travel to Istanbul due to government business, Erdogan's advisors said.
