"The police have launched operation clean-up in Lyari town to purge area of drug-barons and criminals and in this regard SHOs of all four police stations in the Lyari Town have been asked to identify 'black-sheep' in their under-command officials," he said.
Talking to newsmen after 59th passing out parade at the Police Training Centre, Saeedabad, he did not rule out possibility of seeking assistance from Pakistan Rangers in operation clean-up against criminals in Lyari, saying all efforts will be made in this regard.
"I have given ultimatum to SHOs of the area to get rid of black-sheep in the force within 24 hours, and the ultimatum is expiring on Saturday evening", he said, adding that police were making progress against Arshad Puppo, the notorious criminal of the area.
It is worth mentioning here that two groups of drug-barons and terrorists have been operative in Lyari Town for last many years and their internal feud has claimed lives of many innocent people.
The IGP said the police have occupied many buildings, including one used by Arshad Puppo as his residence and four close aides of the accused have been arrested. In addition, many suspects have also been taken into custody for interrogation, he added.
Syed Kamal Shah said the task of cleaning Lyari of criminals and drug-pushers have assigned to TPO Javed Baloch, who is an honest and committed officer, adding over 300 police personnel, including 100 commandos are taking part in the operation. "It is for the first time that situation is under control as area people are also co-operating with law-enforcement agencies", he said, and informed that there were 28 cases of murder, attempt to murder, police encounters and kidnapping for ransom against Arshad Puppo.
"In case, Arshad Puppo is arrested by present team of TPO Lyari, all four SHOs and other officials will be promoted into next grades", he announced, saying that the office of Arshad Puppo's father is being used as police control centre.
"He (Arshad Puppo) had 17 buildings and compounds in his control, where abductees were kept and subjected to violence and torture", said the IGP.
