UK wheat exporters shipped 134,026 tonnes of wheat to other EU member states in May, taking cumulative overseas shipments for 2003/04 (July-June) to more than 2.08 million tonnes, official customs data showed on Thursday.
Exports to EU states in April amounted to 94,067 tonnes. Spain was against Britain's largest customer in May, with a purchase of 56,529 tonnes, followed by Italy, which took 31,273 tonnes and France with 20,065 tonnes.
Other buyers included Portugal with 14,369 tonnes and Ireland with 3,750 tonnes. There were no shipments outside the EU for the third month in a row. Total wheat exports in 2002/03 were 3.4 million tonnes.
Total UK barley exports in May amounted to 28,654 tonnes, nearly 20,000 tonnes of which was shipped within the EU and taking the total exported so far for the season to 872,444 tonnes.
Spain was the main recipient with 14,860 tonnes, the figures showed. Britain shipped around 1.1 million tonnes of barley for the entire 2002/03 marketing year.
The data indicated that some 33,182 tonnes of rapeseed went overseas in May, with Germany taking 21,404 tonnes and Belgium-Luxembourg accounting for much of the rest.
Wheat imports in May were 78,576 tonnes, up from 41,725 tonnes in April.
