World Bank (WB) through the International Development Association (IDA) agreed to provide Rs 4.5 billion loan to restructure irrigation network in Sindh.
An agreement in this regard is schedule to be signed on July 27 between the Sindh government and IDA.
The provincial secretary for agriculture Sabhago Khan Jatoi will sign the agreement on behalf of Sindh government.
The project envisages lining of 4000 watercourses, rehabilitation of 125 canals, and laser levelling of 0.1 million acres of land during four years.
Monitoring and evaluation of the project is designed in such a way, which will provide continuous learning and adjustment of project. It will involve participatory monitoring based on self-defined indicators by farmers' organisation and water consumers association.
The recommendation for the project would be monitored as part of over all arrangements for monitoring project performance.
The experts are of the opinion that once the project was completed the water losses would be reduced by 20 to 25 MAF and the saved water would be provided to growers to improve their production.
