Amnesty International (AI), Pakistan chapter, organised a rally here at Aabpara Chowk to highlight protest on "Violence against women".
A large number of people, especially females from the twin cities participated in the demonstration. The protesters carried banners inscribed with slogans like "Stop Violence Against Women".
Amnesty International president, Amjad Hussain Alvi said at the occasion that they condemn violence and torture against women, lack of property rights, premature marriages, Karo Kari (honour killing), Hudood ordinance, acid and stove burning cases, exploitation of basic human rights and restrictions on freedom of expression for women.
Alvi further said that Amnesty International Pakistan intended to constitute a committee for holding dialogue with the government and the Parliamentarians for promulgation of law regarding violence against women.
Women comprised 50 percent of our population but they are being deprived of their basic rights. This is high time to actively pursue the cause of womenfolk and condemn violence against women, said AI president.
Amjad Farooq, Secretary General AI (Rawalpindi) Sayyed Mazhar Hussain Sherazi, (advocate) Deputy Co-ordinator AlP, Reverend Mushtaq Gulab, President (AI-Murree Group) and Malik Ilyas led the demonstration.
