On the call given by Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), lawyers community here on Wednesday observed Black Day in protest against the nomination of Shaukat Aziz as Prime Minister of Pakistan prior to his election as MNA.
Most of bar members remained available in the bar rooms and discussed the country's political situation.
According to a spokesman of PBC, different bar associations across the country also hoisted black flags on its premises and passed resolutions against illegal actions of the government.
The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) also held an emergent meeting with its president Ahmed Awais.
Addressing the meeting, bar members including Ziaullah Khan, Khawar Mehmood Khatana, Barrister Zafarullah Khan, Allah Baksh Gondal and others announced that the lawyers' community would not accept Shaukat Aziz as Prime Minister of Pakistan. They also announced that the lawyers would also launch a movement against Shaukat Aziz's removal.
They said that Shaukat Aziz was appointed finance minister on the US directions and now his appointment as Prime Minister has given a clear indication that Pakistan has become a colony of America.
They said that present rulers not only subverted the parliamentary system by nominating Shaukat Aziz as Prime Minister before his election but also put sovereignty of the country at stake by acting upon the directions of the Bush administration.
They said that people of Pakistan will not accept Shaukat Aziz as Prime Minister of Pakistan and will continue its struggle for supremacy of law and strengthening of democracy in the country.
Moreover, Chairman Executive Committee Pakistan Bar Council Kazim Khan and other representatives of the bar told newsmen that present rulers should abstain from subverting the parliamentary system of government in the country.
They maintained that present government is taking illegal and unconstitutional steps to support President Pervez Musharraf who is working on US agenda. They said that dictators always weakened the political institutions for their ulterior motives.
They said that lawyers would not allow the present rulers to subvert the parliament and the constitution of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, a meeting of representatives of different bar associations will be held here on Thursday, August 19 to chalk out strategy against the government decision to amend the Legal Practitioner and Bar Council Act.
Punjab Bar Council has invited the presidents and secretaries of the tehsil and district bar associations for this meeting. After the meeting, a procession will be taken out from the bar office to Punjab Assembly building.
It may be mentioned that the government has proposed amendments in the act in question, to give powers to the high courts to take disciplinary action against the lawyers on the charge of misconduct.
