Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Tariq Hameed has said that work on three phases of Rainee Canal Project (RCP) has been completed on a satisfactory notes, and hoped that with the completion of its fourth phase the project would be ready on its schedule.
The Wapda Chairman, who visited Gudu Power Plant, Rainee Canal Project and Thermal Power Station Sukkur on Thursday, was talking to newsmen prior to his departure to Lahore.
He said the RCP was part of the Wapda vision-2025, which would bring tremendous progress and prosperity in Ghotki and its surrounding areas.
The Wapda Chairman said that work on several other mega projects of the Wapda was in progress under vision-2025, and referred to Chotiay Dam project in Sanghar, which had already been commissioned sometime back.
He said the RCP was designed to pass water flow to 5,155 cusecs, adding that he inspected its work of three phases and was satisfied with the quality of work.
The Wapda Chairman said the recent power breakdowns in some parts of Sindh had been due to fault in the Software of Liberty Power Plant of Daharki, and the Liberty management had summoned an expert to rectify the fault, which would take sometime.
However, he said the Wapda started work on an additional 132-KV transformer at Gudu Power station so that in case an emergency it could serve as an alternate power transmission arrangement. "This also can serve as a permanent arrangement in future," he remarked.
The Wapda Chairman also spoke about his visit to Sukkur Thermal Power station, and hoped that it would be ready before the summer season of 2005.
He said the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) had been awarded the contract of laying a supply line via Sunder Road for running the Thermal station on natural gas.
It was a good power supply plant, he said, and would ease down the power supply problem of his area in future.
He said, he had directed Thermal Power Station authorities to start work on its two units on priority, so that it commissioned on time, and after that they could take up work on its third transformer.
The Wapda Chairman said the RCP would be a multipurpose project, which on completion would accord benefits of better utilisation of flood water, potable water for arid zone, social uplift and poverty alleviation, besides improving the environment of the area.
He also held meetings with Hesco Chief Executive Adeebul Hasan Rizvi, Chief Engineer Gudu Jamil Akhtar, and Chief Engineer Sukkur Yahya Bashir on Wednesday at Gudu Power Station.
