The Minister for Education, Lieutenant General Javed Ashraf Qazi (Retd) on Wednesday expressed firm resolve to introduce a fee structure for private schools.
"The private schools would be regulated and a fee structure would be introduced for them besides they will not be allowed to cross a certain fee barrier," he told PTV in an interview.
There must be certain basic requirements to be fulfilled for opening a school. They must provide basic facilities like play- grounds, laboratories to the students, he added.
Highlighting salient features of the proposed education policy, the minister said economic oriented useful technical education would be stressed in the new policy. Pay and allowances of teachers would be brought to a respectable level besides offering incentives to educated youth to join the education sector specially to become a science teacher, he remarked.
He disclosed that 'Salam Teachers Day' would be celebrated next month on October 6. Every one would be urged to express his thanks to his teacher on that day.
The monopoly of text- book boards will be ended and reputed private publishers would be involved in publishing while sticking on to the same material, he said.
Qazi said a vigilance cell in the ministry would be established to look after implementation process of policies. NGOs not delivering the goods would be black listed. whereas those doing well would be encouraged, he added.
The minister was of the view that curriculum should he revised after every five years through educational experts of good repute.
Referring to religious institutions, he said one million students of religious schools would be imparted modern education while keeping their independence intact.
Responding to a question the minister said approximately, 50 million Pakistanis are illiterate, while about 70 percent Pakistani children are unaware of science education.
