Member British Parliament, Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar said that had Kashmiris been given the right to decide their future destiny in 1947 they would have been spared of the sacrifices of one lakh of their people.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Chaudhry Sarwar made the remarks while addressing a function arranged here by Kashmiri American Council.
He said, India has occupied Kashmir through military intervention and continues to keep its stranglehold over the territory.
British MP said that India has reneged from its commitments and implementation of UN resolutions on Kashmir to which India itself is a signatory.
Kashmiris, he said are struggling for implementation of United States (UN) resolutions and their freedom struggle cannot be branded as terrorism.
Chaudhry Sarwar said, Britain has been playing its role for a peaceful settlement of the issue in accordance with the wishes of Kashmiri people.
Attention of British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Foreign Secretary are being drawn to accord priority to the settlement of the Kashmir dispute for peace in the region, he said.
Chaudhry Sarwar pointed out that more than hundred MPs representing different parties have signed the resolution placed in the parliament in support of the right of self-determination and against human rights violations and an All Parties Group on Kashmir has also been formed to highlight the issue.
President World Kashmir Freedom Movement, Dr Ghulam Nabi Mir presided over the function. He stressed the need for resolving the issue in accordance with the wishes of Kashmiris.
He said, Kashmiris desire a lasting and positive resolution of the problem.
