Indonesia, with its oil production in decline, has urged Caltex Pacific Indonesia to develop a tertiary oil recovery project for the Minas field to boost production, energy watchdog BP Migas said on Thursday.
Caltex is the biggest oil contractor operating in Indonesia and produced 508,000 barrels per day (bpd) in August compared with 497,000 bpd in July.
"We have asked Caltex to develop a tertiary oil recovery project in Minas to boost production," BP Migas chairman Rachmat Sudibyo told reporters.
"The reserves in Minas are still big, estimated at around four billion barrels. If we can take ten percent of that amount through the project that will boost our oil output," he added.
"Indonesia's oil production is declining because many wells are ageing," he said.
A Caltex official, who declined to be identified, said the company was currently testing the Minas field for enhanced recovery aimed at boosting production.
