A lot is being expected from Shaukat Aziz after his taking over as the PM of the country, which is equally being derided by the opposition for his not having a political background. I do not wish to disappoint the optimists but the fact is that whatever he achieved as Finance Minister was due to his being a non-politician where he did not have to oblige the party members nor coalesce the coalition partners.
However, ever since he has been infected with the germs of the politics his performance has had an obvious setback. First, it was the wanton loss of life of innocent persons at Fateh Jang during his election campaign. Then, it fell to him to head the biggest-ever cabinet in the history of Pakistan. His turning into a politician is taking a heavy toll out of him.
He can still retrieve the situation by running the government on the corporate lines. He has already announced taking stock of Ministers' performance every quarterly. A defaulting minister could be served with a warning for the first time, followed by his dismissal for a repeat poor performance. No third time should be the order of the day.
Similarly, to impose corporate culture in all government offices throughout the country, strict adherence to office timings should be introduced. Officer incharge should be held strictly responsible to enforce the timings. If he cannot do so and is found failing in it on more than one occasion, he must be relieved of his position immediately.
I assure the PM that every one will fall in line and it will be an effective first step towards good governance.
