A flight delayed enroute is an understandable situation, something which a passenger detests, but tolerates. However when an aircraft deputed to fly from its country of origin of that airline, is found out to have a major defect, just at the time of departure, this points to serious lapse.
On 12 September, my brother's family was to fly by Pk 737, an A310 aircraft to Paris, when they were informed that due to fuel leak the aircraft was delayed. The aircraft reached Paris almost 6 hours late.
This aircraft, recently inducted into PIA a few months ago, should not have had this major structural problem. It points to a grave crisis of engineering and the manner in which people assigned to make such deals, give the go-ahead. Either they are incompetent, or else the deal involved kickbacks. It calls for evaluation of this deal by an independent body comprising professionals and also accountability of those involved, including members of PIAC board of directors. The confidence of PIA passengers is badly shaken by such problems, which jeopardise safety. It also exposes the unprofessionalism of PIA's top management, especially those involved in aircraft procurement and those who maintain and check them.
