Higher Education Commission (HEC) has launched a six-day in-service training course on geography for university/college teachers here at its regional centre on Monday.
Speaking at the inaugural session, the Punjab University Vice-Chancellor, Arshad Mahmood said that trained teachers had been instrumental in the development of the country. The government had allocated Rs9.0 billion for the promotion of higher education.
He asked the teachers to incorporate new trends in their teaching approach, as they were responsible for imparting quality education.
He further said the university was the pioneer in introducing quality teaching facilities and other institutions were following the example set by it. Education was not only for the transmission of knowledge but also aimed at character building of students.
He called for converting the syllabus into curriculum so in order to improve the ability of students.
The curriculum would lay down the percentage of lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, assignments and test in an academic year to develop cognitive domain of students to ensure understanding, reasoning originality and creativity.
Chairperson PU Department of Geography, Professor Dr Farhat Gulzar said on the occasion that the university had reviewed the curriculum keeping in view the latest developments in geography.
The course would be research-oriented and also provide a forum to teachers to discuss problems relating to the teaching of geography.
