City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has said that a number of various development projects, including construction of Mai Kolachi, Schon Chowrangi, Hino Chowrangi, and M.A. Jinnah Road have been initiated with the co-operation of the Pakistan Steel and the Port Qasim Authority.
The national financial institutions should also contribute towards the city government efforts for improvement in Karachi's infrastructure and city's development.
He stated this while inaugurating an ATM at the Habib Bank branch at defunct KMC Building here on Saturday.
He said, in a meeting with President Pervez Musharraf, he had requested him to make it binding for the national institutions, who use the city's infrastructure, that this city too has a right on them. They should spend some of their resources on the beautification of the city and help solve its problems.
The President, he said, accepted his proposals for development projects worth Rs 29 billion and now work was fast progressing on these projects. Many of them will be hopefully completed within a year, after which the various facilities of transport, water, sewerage etc will witness an improvement.
Naimatullah said after completion of these projects, people would see a visible change in Karachi.
He told the financial and other institutions that whatever they will do for Karachi, that would be for Karachiites and the city will progress. He emphasised that there is need for both public and private sector organisations to work jointly for the development of Karachi.
The City Nazim pointed out that causes of frustration in our youth would go when possibilities of employment, sports and education will generate. "Our youth had gone towards a wrong direction in the absence of such opportunities and we are striving to bring them back," City Nazim said and sought co-operation of everyone in this regard.
Later, he inaugurated the ATM and also presented written proposals to President HBL Zakir Mahmood, on behalf of City Government for initiation of various projects.
