Debate on water shortage in the Sindh Assembly on Monday was stormy as the opposition attributed the shortage of water to improper arrangement of storage and distribution of water during sowing seasons.
There were moments of tense situation and, at times, the discussion became stormy but the treasury benches managed to control it.
There was, however, consensus among the parliamentarians that adequate measures had become indispensable for water management.
They said that besides acts of nature, people in control of the destiny of the people of Sindh should realise the gravity of the situation and try to manage it.
Provincial Minister for Irrigation and Power Nadir Akmal Leghari, winding up the debate, gave detailed explanations of the situation and said that the government would do its utmost to ensure water conservation and its proper distribution.
The general discussion on the privilege motion moved by Nawab Wasan was heated.
After the conclusion of the debate, Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah reserved order on the privilege motion that is to be announced later.
Wasan had moved a privilege motion against his allegedly illegal detention on August 16-17 night by Mirpurkhas police while he along with his colleagues was on his way to Mithi in connection with the National Assembly by-election in NA-229.
Law Minister Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmed had already opposed the motion and had explained the position of the government.
He had said that Nawab Wasan and his colleagues were detained for checking of papers of the vehicle they were riding.
He said that Nawab Wasan and his companions were in possession of arms as well in an area, which was under Section 144.
In view of the situation, he said there was prima facie no breach of privilege of the MPA and, therefore, the motion should be turned down.
After hearing arguments, the Speaker reserved the order and prorogued the session sine die.
