RAWALPINDI: Umar Naray – the mastermind of the Army Public School attack that killed nearly 150 students and staff members in Peshawar – has been killed in a drone strike in Afghanistan, a senior Pakistan Army official confirmed on Wednesday.
DG Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lt-Gen Asim Bajwa left a message on his Twitter account, saying Commander of the Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan has confirmed death of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander in a telephonic conversation with Army Chief General Raheel Sharif.
“Comd RSM called #COAS, confirmed death of terrorist Umar Narai alias Khalifa Umar, also alias Khalid Khurasani through drone strike in Afgn.”
Intelligence sources had earlier claimed that the militant commander and his associates were targeted in the mountainous region of Acheena Bandar in Nangarhar province on Saturday.
Naray was the mastermind of the brutal attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar on December 16, 2014 and also claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack on the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda earlier this year.
The US State Department had designated Umar Naray a global terrorist four days after a drone strike killed Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour in Balochistan on May 21.
The militant commander belonged to TTP’s Tariq Geedar group and had fled to Afghanistan following a military operation in Khyber tribal region and continued to operate from there.
