National Democratic Front (NDF), while expressing grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation, demanded resignation of both the Federal Interior Minister and Punjab Chief Minister.
NDF leaders Mian Azhar, Elahi Bux Soomro, Air Marshal Asghar Khan (Retd) and Wazir Khan Jogezai told newsmen at a press conference that in the NDF's meeting held here on Friday, a resolution was unanimously passed condemning the Sialkot and Multan incidents.
The meeting demanded constitution of a National Monitoring Cell to overlook the working of the law enforcing agencies.
They said that another resolution was also passed that condemned the prohibition of political and religious gatherings, as it negate freedom of expression. They said that no such example would be found in a true democratic society. "We demand a conducive political environment so that political players could play their positive role to promote unity and end growing unrest in the masses," they added.
The NDF leaders also demanded restoration of the 1973 Constitution in its original shape, constitution of an independent Election Commission and holding of elections in a fair manner. Supremacy of the Parliament should be respected by every institution, they added.
Mian Azhar said that both Nawaz Sharif and Benazir should be permitted to return to the country and take part in the fresh elections.
"Moreover, accountability process should be made transparent and fair, and it should also extended to the members of the government who were indulged in criminal activities," he added.
