Wasa dismantles 2356 water connections

The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), in its drive against defaulters and illegal water connections, has disconnected more than 2356 water connections including 425 illegal connection, while 1125 consumers were sent disconnection notices.
In September, more than 657 commercial and domestic water connections were disconnected including 82 illegal connections, while 976 consumers were challaned.
Wasa officials told this scribe that seven teams, headed by the revenue director, were constituted to make the drive more effective.
They said that Wasa had announced a relief package for defaulters, which expired in April 2004, and people were asked to pay their outstanding bills in time to avoid fine and disconnection.
But, they said, many people are still reluctant to pay outstanding bills. During this campaign more than 5500 consumers were challaned while 872 disconnection notices were issued.
Wasa officials said that fines will be deposited in person at the Wasa head office.
