The Town Nazims of Karachi on Sunday complained against the unnecessary interference by certain provincial ministers in the smooth working of town administrations.
"We are serving the citizens honestly, but those who do not like to serve are creating problems for us", said Faseehuddin, Town Nazim, North Nazimabad, while addressing a joint press conference of other town nazims at the Karachi Press Club on Sunday afternoon.
Jamshed Town Nazim Ahmed Qasim, Korangi Town Nazim Pareekh Abdul Majeed, Malir Town Nazim Naveedul Islam, North Karachi Town Nazim Shafeeq-ur-Rehman, Gulshan Iqbal Town Nazim Abdul Wahab, Gulberg Town Nazim Farooq Naimatullah, and Landhi Town Nazim Shahid were also present on the occasion.
They claimed all 18 Town Nazims except Orangi Town Nazim Gudoo Bihari, who is in jail, are united against the Sindh government's interference.
They claimed that Lyari Town Nazim Abdul Khaliq Juma, Gadap Town Nazim Murtaza Baloch, and Keamari Town Nazim Zulfiqar Younus are also with them.
They alleged that ministers belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement interfere and stop the implementation on the orders issued by the Town Nazims while Sindh government supports them deliberately.
Whenever towns receive honest officers the Sindh government issues immediate transfer orders for them affecting the smooth working of the Town Nazims, they alleged.
Citing an example of victimisation of Liaquatabad Town Nazim Dr Pervez Mahmood, they alleged that he was targeted under the instructions of the Sindh governor himself, saying Dr Pervez was kept in police custody for 7-8 hours, and then an FIR got registered against him without any charge.
They warned if this interference prolonged they will stop all kind of works from Union Council to Towns and city government level in protest.
They said the federal government is fully aware of this, but they have given free-hand to Muttahida's Sindh ministers to create hindrances, and, in fact, this will damage the idea of local government system.
They said all Nazims are elected hence they should be given their status, and demanded the Sindh chief minister to convene meeting with Town Nazims separately to listen to their grievances and redress them without delay.
They also appealed to all major political parties to call an all parties conference to discuss the problems of Town Nazims of 18 towns of Karachi.
