Iran wheat output exceeds consumption

Iran, formerly a major importer of wheat, has already produced enough of the grain domestically to surpass the country's projected demand for the year to March 2005, an Agriculture Ministry spokesman said.
"We have so far purchased 11.104 tonnes of wheat from local farmers and all what we buy in coming months will be surplus production," the spokesman said.
Iran's Ministry of Agriculture said the country needs 11.04 million tonnes of wheat to meet domestic consumption.
"We expect the domestic purchase from farmers to reach 11.389 million tonnes this year," the spokesman added.
