US stocks barely budged on Friday afternoon as data gave a mixed picture of the economy, which grew at a slower-than-expected pace in the third quarter.
Energy stocks' gains, however, helped the major stock indexes stay almost level. Energy companies, whose shares fell on Thursday following a drop in the price of crude, rebounded. ConocoPhillips, a member of the S&P 500, rose 1.4 percent to $84.10, while Dow component Exxon Mobil Corp gained 50 cents to $49.11.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 7 points, or 0.07 percent, at 10,012. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 0.90 of a point, or 0.08 percent, at 1,127. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was down 6 points, or 0.32 percent, at 1,970.
