A soldier from the US army's Third Infantry Division has said he helped remove 200 tonnes of explosives, including plastic explosives, from an Iraqi weapons site from which high explosives have gone missing, a Pentagon spokesman said on Friday.
"He went through and moved 200 tonnes from those bunkers, including plastic explosives," Pentagon Spokesman Lawrence DiRita told reporters.
DiRita said the soldier, who was to appear at a Pentagon press conference, said the explosives were removed from the al-Qaqaa site "on or about April 13".
The explosives have been reported missing by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and have become a major issue in the dying days of the US presidential election campaign.
