Pakistan's ambassador in Russia, Syed Iftikhar Murshed has said that Islamic countries should enact laws to promote enlightened moderation in their societies.
In line with Pakistan's policy, the OIC have also adopted the concept of enlightened moderation, he added.
According to a fax message received here on Tuesday Iftikhar Murshed stated this during his address to the conference on "Russia-Islamic World: Strategic Dialogue" organised by a group of 45 DUMA members with a view to promote better understanding between Islamic countries and Russia.
The ambassador drew the attention of the participants to the Quranic verses and injunctions, that forbade acts of terrorism.
He said the term Jihad was completely misunderstood and its basic purpose was to promote better living in accordance with the principles of social welfare, justice and equity.
Referring to the causes of terrorism Iftikhar Murshed said that its root causes must be addressed. The creation of Israel in Arab and Palestinian territories led to religious and ethnic cleansing in which Muslims have been the victims.
Other speakers including co-ordinator of the conference and member of DUMA Contact Group for Islamic World, Shamil Zagitovitch Sultanov and senior members of Russian think tanks called for active social, cultural, educational and economic co-operation between Russia and the Islamic world.
