Founder leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Altaf Hussain has offered to play his role in improving relations between India and Pakistan and called for a meaningful partnership between the two neighbours. He was talking to newsmen on arrival in New Delhi from London here on Thursday. He also received Iftar invitation from Sajjada Nashin of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia's shrine, which he accepted.
Indian parliament member and leader of Communist party Marxist (India) CPIM Yusuf Tari Gami called on MQM leader. Altaf Hussain later spoke to Indian leader Nirmala Desphande who hailed his visit as a "good omen for better Indo-Pak relations, and may contribute to peace in the region".
Earlier talking to newsmen at Heathrow Airport, Altaf Hussain called for expeditious development in economic, social, and trade ties between Pakistan and India.
He also called for opening Khokhrapar-Srinagar border for free movement of people. He recalled he had been stressing for reopening of Indian Consulate in Karachi to issue visa to divided families, most of whom, live in Sindh.
He said he would try to present a solution of Kashmir dispute, which would be acceptable to the people of India and Pakistan and to Kashmiris living on either sides of the Line of Control (LoC).
The MQM leader said President General Pervez Musharraf has given his opinion for public debate about solution of Kashmir dispute.
He appealed to the people to pray for his success in India, acceptability of his solution on Kashmir dispute, and success in his endeavours to ensure lasting peace in the region. "I am ready to play my role for that."
