Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH) has been imparting medical education as an integral part of its vision to train healthcare professionals who can help improve the standard of medical care in Pakistan. SKMCH was also a post-graduate training institution duly recognised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan in the field of Medical Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology, Radiation Therapy and Radiology, said Khawaja Nazir Ahmad, Media Manager of the hospital here on Thursday.
According to him, the Royal College of Physicians UK had also recognised SKMCH Department of Medicine for post-graduate training. Apart from that, the Pakistan Nursing Council had also recognised the hospital for the Diploma in Oncology Nursing. The hospital since its recognition by the Pakistan Nursing Council had so far imparted one-year training to 30 students for Diploma in Oncology.
He further said the hospital was involved in several research projects which include cancer drug research, outcomes of patients' treatment and epidemiology studies. In addition, a few projects on the genetics of cancer were under process, he added. The hospital was affiliated with some of the most prestigious cancer institutions world-wide which assist in training of personnel and obtaining latest information regarding innovation in cancer treatment and research methodologies.
He stated expansion of the laboratory collection centres network and opening of new diagnostic centres in Lahore and Karachi, replacement of equipment, Bone Marrow Transplant and setting up of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Karachi were the strategic plans of the hospital, he added. However, the hospital had recently purchased latest equipment for its radiology and radiation department at a cost of dollars 4 million, he maintained.
This year, SKMCH had been awarded prestigious UAE Foundation Award 2004 by the World Health Organisation in recognition of services in healthcare sector.
He also said over 100,000 new cases of cancer were being reported every year in the country.
