Speed-reading is not the only way of reading but this is a good and very important way by which a person can get more things in less time. This was stated by Syed Kamran Sultan, a licensed trainer and master practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) for Society of NLP (USA), during a workshop on "Speed Reading: Increasing your reading speed, comprehension and recall" organised by Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) at its Vicky Zeitlin Media Library, Karachi on Thursday.
Syed Kamran Sultan said that a person could improve his reading speed by some practice but a person should know about his goals of study.
"We should know our objectives before reading anything otherwise we will lose our time and money as well", he said adding that the objectives created concentration in reading and reader could get things in less time properly. He advised the participants that before buying any book they should have some information about it whether it was related to their objectives or not.
Many people come to know after reading the whole book that the subject was useless for them, he said adding that the pre-information could save the time and money.
Syed Kamran said: "Before buying any book we should see its title, preface, index, some other information given in the end, headings of different chapters, graphs and picture given in it". After previewing, a person could suggest that what the book was related to its objectives, he added.
Telling about reading strategy he said," We could get better results by using different strategies". He emphasised that during reading it should be decided that what was important in the subject and the importance should be concentrated during reading.
Kamran told the participants many exercises for speed-reading and quoted that by repeating the following sentence memory and concentration could be improved.
The sentence is " Every day in every way my memory is getting better and better" and it should be repeated more and more especially at night before going to sleep.
Earlier, PPF Director Samina Ishaque said that the workshop was aimed to increase reading rate and comprehension, memory, retention and recall, learning and study skills and to learn an effective method for taking notes.
