The visit of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to three member countries of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (Saarc) is success and a moral booster for economic indicators of the region, said Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) President Najam Rehan; besides, promoting of economic co-operation this visit would help eliminate poverty, illiteracy and unemployment in the region.
Talking to reporters here on Thursday, RCCI chief said Prime Minister's visit to South Asian countries would bring economic stability in the region besides, it would help to improve the living standard of the people and resolving their many social problems.
Najam Rehan expressed optimism that prime minister's visit would prove a milestone and would open an era of peace, harmony, development and prosperity in the region.
"Almighty Allah has bestowed South Asia with huge potential of natural and other resources but unfortunately the governments in this region could not exploit these resources and benefit their people", Najam Rehan said adding that South Asia had 25 per cent of total world population but the rate of poverty was high in the region.
He said it was need of hour that SAARC member countries should increase their co-operation in socio economic structure and get benefits from one another, he urged.
Najam Rehan expressed hope the visit would restore the confidence of all foreign and domestic investors in the region and they would invest their money in different industrial and other sectors in South Asia.
"We have huge resources but even after that we are poverty ridden and suffering from various problems", he said and added governments should increase their allocations in social sector in order to provide better health, education and other facilities to masses.
