Iraq has set a tender to buy 100,000 tonnes to 150,000 tonnes of hard red winter wheat from the United States for December-January shipment, US grain traders said on Monday. They said the deadline for submitting offers to the Grain Board of Iraq was November 17.
Last month, Iraq bought 1 million tonnes of wheat from Australia's monopoly wheat exporter, AWB Ltd, which had been Baghdad's main source of wheat during the leadership of Saddam Hussein before he was toppled more than a year ago.
US Department of Agriculture data showed US wheat sold to Iraq in the current season, which began on June 1, totalled 159,600 tonnes. In the 2003/04 marketing year, sales were 246,600 tonnes.
