Pakistan is importing lowest priced black tea from China as compared to other 15 countries from where Pakistan imports this variety of tea. On the other hand, highest priced tea is imported from Sri Lanka. In October 2004, Pakistan imported 26,500 kg tea from China at the rate of only Rs 32.91 per kg, while from Sri Lanka 200056.40 kg tea was imported at the rate of Rs 124.92 per kg. Tea from India cost Rs 74.06 per kg to Pakistani importers.
According to analysis of tea import statistics of Tea Association of Pakistan (PTA), after China lowest priced tea was imported from Vietnam which came to Rs 67.68 per kg, which is more than double of the price of tea from China.
Pakistan imported highest quantity of tea from Kenya (3,594,446.98 kg) at the rate of Rs 109.99 per kg.
Other countries from where Pakistan is importing tea are Bangladesh (Rs 76.98 per kg); Burundi (Rs 98.73 per kg); Congo (Rs 86 per kg); Ethiopian (Rs 91.10 per kg); Indonesia (Rs 74.27 per kg); Malawi (Rs 87.70 per kg); Rawanda (Rs 116.72 per kg), S Africa (Rs 81.71 per kg); Tanzania (Rs 93.70 per kg); and Uganda (Rs 96.84 per kg).
Likewise, Pakistan imported lowest priced green tea also from China which cost Rs 33.76 per kg. During the same period Pakistan imported 70,175 kg green tea from China which is also highest imported quantity of green tea.
Pakistan is importing green tea from three countries which beside China are Bangladesh (Rs 128.11 per kg) and Vietnam (Rs 70.37 per kg).
