Five activists of banned Shia organisation "Tehrik-i-Islami Pakistan" (TIP) and banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), who were arrested and detained for three months in Jhang after a bomb blast in Multan on October 7, were released on Thursday from the District Jail Jhang as the provincial home secretary withdrew their detention orders. "Five activists of the banned TIP and SSP were released under the orders of the provincial home secretary. They were earlier detained under MPO-16 when the bomb blast incident occurred in Multan on October 7," said Hamid Mukhtar Gondal, DPO Multan.
Those who were released are: Sarfraz Quiyana, district president of TIP; a teacher of Madrasah Kuliat-ul-Ahle-Bait Chiniot, Wajid Ali Naqvi and three activists of SSP. However, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Jhangvi, a leader of Millat-i-Islamia Pakistan, is still under detention.
Meanwhile, Bhakkar police have arrested an activist of the banned SSP, Muhammad Abubakr, from a village near Khanewal, some 45-km east of Multan. The home secretary has issued his detention orders for three months under MPO-16. He is detained in Sargodha prison.
Muhammad Abubakr was arrested on the charge of a bomb blast in an Imambargah of Bhakkar but the court acquitted him giving him benefit of doubt. In spite of acquittal, the home secretary detained him for three months. Later, he was released in September, 2004.
