The Punjab government has released a soft-term loan worth Rs 90 million for the early establishment of tanneries zone. Sialkot District Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid told the newsmen here on Friday that the Sialkot Tanneries Zone would be developed on 300 acres of land near Sahowala, Daska tehsil, on main Sialkot-Sambrial-Wazirabad Road.
He said that as many as 250 tanneries of different sizes were functioning in and around the Sialkot City, adding all those tanneries would be shifted to that zone. The construction work on the project would be started in January 2005, he added.
The District Nazim said that step was being taken to cope with the growing threats of pollution, caused by the tanneries in Sialkot, Sambrial and Daska's different areas.
He said the tanneries zone would eventually handle tanneries' wastewater of 18,1000 cubic metres per day.
He said the proposed project would introduce efficient measures for improving the degraded environmental condition of the area due to the concentration of tanneries in Sialkot.
Besides, it would help in reducing the pollution caused by the existing "ill-planned" tanneries and improve the overall living and working conditions of the population of Sialkot, he added.
Naeem Javaid said the grand project would also improve the technical and managerial levels, bring in better technology and would also help in scientific treatment of effluents, solid waste and the sludge management.
