An earth tremor shook a region near the Algerian capital on Sunday, slightly injuring 46 people days after an earthquake hit the same area, officials said. The state seismological institute said the tremor measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, and hit at 9:31 am (0831 GMT) just off the coastal town of Zemmouri. A devastating quake in the region killed 2,300 people in May last year.
"It's a tremor linked to the earthquake of 2003, which is still capable of generating strong aftershocks and may continue to do so for some time," said a spokesman from Algeria's seismic authority, CRAAG.
Zemmouri is located in the seismically active Boumerdes province, 50 km (30 miles) east of the capital. The tremor was also felt in Algiers.
Frightened local residents fled their homes.
