Pakistan economy has vulnerable export base so the European Union should ensure continuity of their understanding on the issue of market access. Commerce Secretary Tasneem Noorani stated this during his meetings with Amadeo Teti, Director General for External Trade and Adolfo Urso, Deputy Minister in-charge of External Trade, held in Italy. Noorani is visiting Italy to discuss and exchange views with his counterparts in evolving new ways and means to expand trade.
A wide range of bilateral trade and economic matters were discussed in an atmosphere of cordiality and complete understanding of each other's position on the bilateral and multilateral trade matters.
Tasneem Noorani highlighted the progress and stability the Pakistani economy has attained during the last few years as a result of sustained economic policies of the government, however, he stressed upon Italy to continue their support for meeting and sustaining the developmental needs of Pakistan.
In the light of Italy's own proactive support for the fight against terrorism, he expressed his country's recognition and appreciation for the principled stand Pakistan is taking in an ongoing fight against terrorism.
He acknowledged Pakistan's commitment and struggle against terrorism, which is at a huge cost to its own economy and social fabric. He assured Italy's unequivocal support to protect and promote the interests of Pakistan.
The Italian minister shared and agreed with the commerce secretary that present level of trade between Pakistan and Italy does not match the actual potential, which can easily be exploited for the expansion of bilateral trade between both the countries.
It was agreed to undertake renewed efforts to structure and improve the existing framework, which should allow freer flow of trade between both the countries, in particular and EU, in general.
The commerce secretary extended an invitation to the Italian minister to visit Pakistan and during the visit also attend the Pakistan Expo being held from February 2-5, 2005.
Urso evinced keen interest to visit Pakistan along with a delegation of business people and entrepreneurs. Pakistan's Ambassador Qamar Baig assisted the commerce secretary during the meetings.
