Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) has urged Prime Minister to take steps for increasing reliance on local material for energy production and slashing production cost instead of focusing on generation of energy through thermal and other resources.
Responding to Chairman Nepra's appeal to the Prime Minister regarding reduction in the electricity cost, Chairman PSMA Chairman, Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf, in a statement pointed out that the sugar industry could play a vital role in the production of co-generation provided the Wapda is ready to share the burden of equipment cost of high-pressure boilers.
He said the sugar industry is in a position to produce 2500-3000 MW electricity. He further said the sugar industry could produce energy through bagasse during the crushing season and through coal during the off-season that would enable Wapda to meet the rising demand of electricity sufficiently.
He further said that the Wapda could adjust tariffs downward once the production cost for setting up of production units is ensured on the part of the industry.
He added that there are 78 sugar mills in the country, which could easily meet the electricity demand once Wapda is serious in utilising their efficiency for power generation.
He urged the Prime Minister to instruct Wapda authorities to take up the issue seriously with the sugar industry in order to get the country out of energy crisis.-PR
