Ittefaq case reporting prohibited

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday restrained the media-men from reporting the proceedings in the matter of Ittefaq group of industries owned by former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif. Nawaz Sharif had handed over his four industrial units to the financial institutions to clear their liabilities. The court had constituted a committee for disposal of these units. The Committee had finalised bid worth Rs 2.48 billion against the four units but one of the Sharif family members Ilyas Miraj had challenged the post-bidding bargaining.
The petitioner also moved a contempt of court petition against the committee, as the court had issued a stay against post-bidding bargaining.
HEARING PUT OFF: The Lahore High Court adjourned to February 1, proceedings in a petition against establishment of cement plants in Khaoon Valley Kalar Kahar, when the petitioner counsel was submitting his submissions.
The petitioner Dr Pervez Hasan contended the respondent government had allowed setting up of three cement plants in the valley, illegally, and against the public interests. He contended those plants would cause severe pollution in the area, which was salty. He was still submitting his submissions when the court rose for the day.
LHC CANCEL BAILS OF DIG AND OTHERS: The LHC cancelled bails of Deputy Inspector General of Police Multan Malik Iqbal, DPO Sialkot Amjad Saleemi, DPO Gujrat Raja Munawar and police inspector Zulfiqar Vardeg involved in case pertaining to killings of four judges during their visit to Sialkot jail.
The court also dismissed bails of Dr Sajjad Hussain and Dr Sajjad of Sialkot. The court, however, confirmed bails of ten constables involved in the case.
After cancellation of bails, all the police officials escaped from the LHC premises in the presence of heavy police contingent.
The accused are facing charges of negligence in the matter of killings of four judges during their visit to Sialkot jail.
LHC ADJOURNS PROCEEDINGS: The Lahore High Court adjourned to January 27, the proceedings in a number of petitions, challenging the inclusion of poppy straw in the schedule of narcotic drugs as the law officer sought time to submit his submissions.
The petitioners contended that poppy straw could not be included in the list of narcotic drugs, as percentage of toxic content is very low in poppy straw.
LHCBA SETS UP FUND: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) has established a fund for extending help to the people effected by Tsunami disaster and requested all the district bars to send contributions to the bar within a week's time.
The bar, in a meeting held with its President Ahmed Awais in the chair, expressed the resolve of extending all out help to tsunami affected.
The meeting decided to constitute a committee, which would provide funds to the Sri Lankan and Indonesian governments.
Moreover, the bar held a reference in the memory of former President Bar Khudadad Barki. The bar members appreciated the services of late Khudadad.
