Pakistan direly needs to build new water reservoirs to overcome Pakistan needs water shortage in the country, said former Wapda chairman Shams-ul-Mulk on Thursday. "Pakistan has no choice but to build all available water resources to meet water shortage" he said while talking to a private TV channel.
Former Wapda chairman said the country should take benefit from Indus River system otherwise there will be acute water shortage in days to come.
The country has to increase storage capacity by building new dams as about 35 million acre feet water goes waste without any utilisation, he added.
To a question he said average storage capacity in the world at rivers flow is about 40 percent, while Pakistan has ability to store only 10 percent.
He said people, who are opposing new dams, should realise and understand that construction of new water reservoirs are beneficial for the whole nation.
Replying to a question he said Tarbela dam is producing 16 billion units' electricity at the rate of Rs 0.40 per unit only.
Replying to another question he said the country has to take decision regarding the construction of dams keeping in view the ground realities.
