The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has decided to seek viewpoint of Commerce Ministry and Ministry of Industries and Production before launching customs amnesty scheme for the regularisation of non-duty paid smuggled cars. Official sources told Business Recorder on Wednesday that it is necessary to seek comments of these two related ministries before submitting the summary to the Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet.
When asked why the draft summary was not put up in the last ECC meeting, officials said that the summary has to be submitted at least 15 days prior to the meeting, and CBR was engaged in consultation with Commerce Ministry and Ministry of Industries and Production for incorporating their viewpoints.
Sources said that CBR has been working on an amnesty scheme for the last many months to properly legalise these vehicles. All kinds of cars would be covered under the new scheme, including non-duty paid vehicles of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and other border areas.
The owners of the vehicles will have the facility to regularise their cars irrespective of the engine capacity, they added.
Three schemes were launched for regularisation of smuggled vehicles on April 11,1998, June 12,1999 and December 16,1999, which were strongly criticised by International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In the past, the CBR also received a proposal from the President and Prime Minister Secretariat for launching new customs amnesty scheme to regularise non-duty paid smuggled vehicles in FATA.
